Chemical Engineering: Bunkering Officer
Main duties and responsibilities
• Plan, coordinate, and monitor bunker operations for company vessels.
• Liaise with suppliers, surveyors, port authorities, laboratories, and vessel crew.
• Ensure compliance with IMO, MARPOL, ISO 8217, and local regulations on fuel quality, safety, and emissions.
• Review and verify bunker delivery notes, fuel specifications, sampling procedures, and quantity measurements.
• Conduct or oversee fuel sampling, testing, and documentation; investigate off-spec or contamination cases.
• Handle bunker quality and quantity claims and support dispute resolution.
• Monitor bunker markets, negotiate supply terms, and assist in evaluating and benchmarking fuel suppliers.
• Analyze fuel consumption and supply trends and recommend operational or cost-efficiency improvements.
• Track developments in alternative fuels (LNG, biofuels, methanol, ammonia) and relevant regulations (FuelEU, EU ETS).
• Support EUA exposure monitoring, procurement, and reporting obligations.
• Maintain accurate bunkering records and prepare operational and management reports.
• Contribute to ESG reporting and sustainability KPI tracking.
Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering.
• Experience in bunkering operations, marine fuels, shipping logistics, or fuel quality control will be an asset.
• Knowledge of marine fuel types (VLSFO, HSFO, MGO, LNG, biofuels, emerging alternative fuels).
• Understanding of ISO 8217 fuel standards, MARPOL Annex VI, fuel sampling protocols, and emissions-related rules (including EU ETS).
• Ability to interpret laboratory analysis reports and assess off-spec causes.
• Strong communication, negotiation, and coordination skills with suppliers and vessel personnel.
• Ability to work in port environments and onboard vessels with adherence to safety protocols.
• Proficient in documentation, data tracking, and preparing technical or operational reports.
